DAY 1: Paro to Jele Dzong via Damchena Village

DAY 1: Paro to Jele Dzong via Damchena Village
Distance: 10 km | Duration: 4-5 hours | Elevation Gain: +1003m, -10m | Camp Altitude: 3480m

Begin the trek with a steady pace due to significant altitude gain. After breakfast, drive to the National Museum (2487m) in Paro, the starting point. Ascend through apple orchards, Damchena village, and pine forests to reach Jele Dzong (3490m) on a ridge. Explore the ruins of the Dzong and its Lhakhang with a Buddha Sakyamuni statue. Enjoy stunning views of Paro valley and Mount Jumolhari (7315m) on clear days. Camp overnight at 3480m.

DAY 2: Jele Dzong to Jangchulakha

Start with a gradual ascent, followed by a descent below the ridgeline through dense alpine forests and rhododendrons. Spot yak herders along the way and enjoy captivating views of Jumolhari and other Himalayan peaks. Listen for monal pheasants in the area. Continue uphill to a yak pasture at Jangchulakha (3780m), with panoramic Himalayan views. Camp overnight near the hillside.

DAY 3: Jangchulakha to Jimilangtsho Lake

Distance: 11 km | Duration: 4-5 hours | Elevation Gain/Loss: +400m, -300m | Camp Altitude: 3880m

Follow the trail along the ridge, weaving through junipers and dwarf rhododendrons. Enjoy breathtaking views of the Thimphu and Paro valleys. After ascending and descending steeply, arrive at Jimilangtsho Lake (3880m), known for its giant trout. Near the camp, admire views of Jichu Drake (6989m), the protective peak of Paro. Camp close to the lake.

DAY 4: Jimilangtsho via Janetsho Lake to Simkota

Distance: 11 km | Duration: 4 hours | Elevation Gain: +270m | Camp Altitude: 4110m

Trek through dwarf rhododendron trees, bypassing Janetsho Lake. Encounter yak herders and observe their unique lifestyle. The trail undulates, offering spectacular Himalayan vistas across deep valleys. After crossing a final spur, see Simkota Tsho Lake (4110m) below. Continue trekking to a yak pasture for tonight’s campsite.

DAY 5: Simkota via Phajoding to Thimphu City

Begin with a gradual ascent to a saddle at 4150m for majestic views of Mount Gangkar Puensum and other Himalayan peaks (weather permitting). Descend past a small lake and climb to Phume La Pass (4210m), adorned with prayer flags. From here, enjoy panoramic views of Thimphu city below. The trail descends through juniper forests to Phajoding (3870m) and continues downhill through blue pine forests to Sangaygang, on the outskirts of Thimphu.
