GETTING INTO BHUTAN

TRAVEL BY LAND

Bhutan’s land border entry points are a gateway to adventure. Phuentsholing, Gelephu, and Samdrup Jongkhar are your primary access routes, each offering a unique journey into this mystical kingdom.

Start your adventure in Phuentsholing, a bustling town southwest, approximately 149 km from the Indian airport at Bagdogra. From here, embark on a scenic five-hour drive through lush landscapes and beautiful tea estate to reach Phuntsholing, Bhutan’s vibrant commercial hub.

Gelephu, nestled in south-central Bhutan, is another thrilling entry point. A 250 km journey from Thimphu takes you through Bhutan’s sub-tropical lowlands, transitioning into alpine terrain. This seven hours trip traverses three districts, showcasing the kingdom’s diverse beauty. For a longer trek, head to Samdrup Jongkhar in southeast Bhutan. Close to Assam’s Darranga district and 150 km from Guwahati, this route unfolds a journey of 700 km to Thimphu. You’ll traverse across picturesque districts—Trashigang, Mongar, Bumthang, Trongsa, and Wangdue Phodrang—taking at least three days to reach the capital. Alternatively, enjoy a quicker transition by flying from Trashigang’s Yonphula airport to Paro.

Each entry point promises a unique and adventurous introduction to Bhutan’s enchanting landscapes and rich culture.
